Hydrometer Analysis Apparatus (Soil Dispersion Stirrer) — NKMPV NABL laboratory, Pinjore

The dispersion stirrer prepares soil suspensions for hydrometer (sedimentation) analysis — the method used to determine the particle-size distribution of the silt and clay fractions that pass the 75-micron sieve. This grain-size data classifies the soil and predicts drainage and frost behaviour, per IS 2720 (Part 4).

What this equipment tests

  • Particle-size distribution of fine soils (silt/clay)
  • Hydrometer / sedimentation analysis
  • Combined sieve + hydrometer grading

Applicable Indian Standards

  • IS 2720 (Part 4) — Grain size analysis of soils

Frequently asked questions

What is hydrometer analysis?

It determines the proportion of silt and clay in a soil by measuring how a suspension settles over time, extending sieve analysis to particles finer than 75 microns.

Which standard is used?

IS 2720 (Part 4).
