The Thin Film Oven performs the Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT), which simulates the short-term ageing (hardening) that bitumen undergoes during hot mixing and laying. Binder is aged as a thin film at 163 °C, then re-tested for penetration and viscosity to check its durability, per IS 9382.

What this equipment tests

  • Short-term ageing of bitumen (TFOT) at 163 °C
  • Loss on heating / mass change of binder
  • Retained penetration & viscosity after ageing

Applicable Indian Standards

  • IS 9382 — Thin film oven test for bitumen
  • IS 73 — Paving bitumen — specification

Frequently asked questions

What does the thin film oven test simulate?

The hardening (ageing) that bitumen undergoes during hot-mix production and paving, so the binder's durability can be assessed.

At what temperature is TFOT run?

163 °C, per IS 9382.
