The Saybolt Furol Viscometer measures the viscosity of bitumen and cutback bitumen as the time in seconds for a fixed volume to flow through a standard Furol orifice at a controlled temperature. Viscosity governs how a binder mixes, sprays and compacts, per IS 1206.

What this equipment tests

  • Saybolt Furol viscosity of cutback / medium-curing bitumen
  • Viscosity at specified temperatures (e.g. 25 / 40 / 60 °C)
  • Binder flow characteristics for spraying and mixing

Applicable Indian Standards

  • IS 1206 — Determination of viscosity of bitumen
  • IS 217 — Cutback bitumen — specification

Frequently asked questions

What does the Saybolt viscometer measure?

The flow time of a fixed volume of binder through a standard orifice — a practical measure of viscosity for cutbacks and bitumen.

Which standard is used?

IS 1206.
